    You cannot heat something in a vacuum. Air is what transfers the heat to the item you are heating.The only way you could heat it in a vacuum would be with an intense light.

    Cool project. Any chance you can try making a mini hot air balloon lantern that flies?

    You can actually do that with tissue paper and a small bowl made of aluminum foil that has a oil soaked cotton ball burning in it. I recommend very thin wire (like 28 gauge magnet wire) to attach the sheet of paper to the foil. Don't try it near anything flammable, by a airport or in a area where the fire danger is high. Check wind measurements before starting and don't put too much oil on the cotton if the thing going to far away is a problem. Keep a hose or extinguisher nearby at ALL TIMES and DO IT ...
