The new NFL CBA includes an expanded postseason field. There will now be seven teams in each conference making the playoffs, instead of six. Only the top seed in both the NFC and AFC will earn a first-round bye.

There’s obviously a lot to like about this new format, but you can’t help but wonder how NFL history could have changed if the 7-team postseason structure was introduced earlier in the 21st century.

Here, we’re taking a look at the best NFL teams from 2002 to 2019 that got screwed over by the OLD playoff format. We’re excluding teams from 2001 and earlier, because back then there were actually three wild card spots per conference, but also only six divisions in the NFL. So, for the sake of keeping things simple, we’ll focus solely on the LAST playoff format – which consisted of only four division winners and two wild card teams per conference making it in.

So, without further ado, let’s dive into our list of 12 teams that got screwed over the MOST by the NFL’s old playoff format.
